We’re excited to present the works of Fathema Bemath and Buqaqawuli Nobakada, two artists who explore the rich symbolism of lace as a medium for challenging traditional gender norms and celebrating feminine resilience. Bemath’s sculptures juxtapose the strength of workman’s tools with the delicate intricacy of lace and porcelain, questioning the association of fragility with femininity. Nobakada’s mixed media works reclaim lace from its sexualized narrative, presenting it as a symbol of power and self-determination in Black womanhood. Together, their works invite a reexamination of femininity, identity, and the strength woven into the very fabric of women’s lives.
