Johannesburg is a city people rarely feel neutral about. It is loud, layered, beautiful, exhausting and electric, often all at once. This participatory zine workshop at The Atrium invites visitors to respond to the city by making something personal, immediate and unpolished.

Each participant is given a pre-folded A3 sheet to create a mini zine, with no template or instructions. Materials include pens, ink, scissors, glue, brushes, old magazines, maps, skyline photographs and archival imagery of Johannesburg. The focus is on cutting, collaging and assembling your own response to the city as it is experienced, remembered or imagined.

Completed zines can be added to a growing public installation by hanging them on a clothesline, or taken home.

Presented in partnership with Open Window, Johannesburg In Your Pocket and in collaboration with Joburg Photowalkers and LoveJozi.
