“Footnotes” is a group exhibition at Studio Nxumalo that celebrates and honours the
culture of independence among South African artists. The exhibition explores how these
artists navigate the complexities of the art world through innovative negotiations that
propel their artistic practices forward. The exhibition also highlights the lack of inclusion of
independent artists on established art platforms, which undermines their cultural
contributions and value within the broader visual arts landscape. The exhibition features
work by several artists and marks the last show at Keyes Art Mile for the year 2023.
