Exhibition
What if every artwork in the Johannesburg Art Gallery’s collection could be seen, rather than stored out of sight?
Beyond the Gallery presents a series of speculative architectural proposals by third-year students from the University of Johannesburg’s Department of Architecture, developed under the guidance of architect and lecturer Alexander Opper. The projects imagine a radically different JAG: one where the entire collection is permanently visible and the museum is rethought as a more open, connected public space.
More than an architectural exhibition, Beyond the Gallery invites visitors to reflect on the future of museums, access to art, and the relationship between JAG and the city around it. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the ideas on display and contribute their own interpretations of what JAG could become.
The exhibition forms part of a month-long public programme of talks and activations taking place throughout August.
