Makgati Molebatsi Art Consulting and Sizwe Khoza Arts are proud to present The People and I, In Contemplation, a solo exhibition of new work by Johannesburg-based artist Sizwe Khoza. The exhibition will be on view inside the Atrium, Keyes Art Mile, from 03 May to 08 June 2025.
This body of work features 13 new pieces that mark a compelling chapter in Khoza’s ongoing visual and emotional journey. Through deeply introspective and symbolically charged compositions, Khoza invites viewers into a world where memory, solitude, and inner dialogue unfold.
Drawing on his roots in both Mozambique, where he was born, and South Africa, where he lives and works, Khoza’s evolving artistic language is grounded in black portraiture, personal archives, and everyday encounters. In this latest series, the metaphor of chess becomes a central motif – a contemplative device through which themes of power, strategy, and life’s unpredictability are explored.
Khoza’s practice reflects a nomadic sensibility — a continual movement guided by instinct, shaped by experiences of displacement, and rooted in a search for meaning beyond the boundaries of convention. His work delves into themes of spirituality, human connection, and the emotional weight of living in a fractured world. With each piece, he reaches toward a sense of unity and understanding in the midst of isolation and adversity.
The People and I, In Contemplation extends the inquiries of his 2022 solo series At Least For Now, deepening its exploration of solitude, reconnection, and the sacredness of self-reflection. Created during a pivotal time of transition – leaving the city, returning home, and building a new studio – the works resonate as meditative studies in the art of being alone.
Each piece honours the internal landscape, illuminating the “people within” and the quiet, often overlooked power of introspection. Khoza reminds us that solitude is not a void – it is a space of presence, depth, and renewal.
