Assembled over many years while living abroad, Dr Bruce Hoffman’s collection speaks to a sustained and deeply personal relationship with South Africa from a distance. Spanning modern and contemporary works by Peter Clarke, Penny Siopis, Gladys Mgudlandlu, Ephraim Ngatane, Louis Maqhubela and Vladimir Tretchikoff, among others, Holding Time offers a thoughtful overview of South African art history — grounded not in trend, but in years of careful looking and considered collecting.
Modern & Contemporary Art Day & Evening Sales Live Auction: 18 June 2026
The Day and Evening sales present an outstanding selection of works across generations of South African art. Highlights include Walter Battiss’s monumental Spirit of Africa, a lyrical painting by Maggie Laubser, a 1994 work by George Pemba drawn from the artist’s retrospective, and a striking charcoal drawing by William Kentridge. The sales are further anchored by works from Robert Hodgins, Senzeni Marasela, Kate Gottgens, Ayanda Mabulu and Simphiwe Ndzube, among others.
