The theme of identity is woven throughout each artist’s practice\, which is rooted in their personal histories\, cultural backgrounds\, and creative processes. \nStreet Level\nBKhz   \nExhibition – Liguqubele iZulu\, \nArtist Sethembile Msezane \nBKhz Gallery is thrilled to present Sethembile Msezane’s latest exhibition\, Liguqubele iZulu\, a thought-provoking exploration of the human experience through a journey of self-reflection and emotional discovery. Msezane’s monochromatic paintings take on the shape of cloud formations\, representing a fog of darkness\, release through rainstorms\, and even a floating lightness. The exhibition intricately interweaves the physical and spiritual realms\, in grappling with various forms of loss. “A forecast of difficult times ahead- an intrusive message that’s hard to prepare for. The body of work Liguqubele iZulu reflects upon the personal challenges that were to come as communicated between realms of the physical and spiritual”\, explained Msezane. \nThis work is a reflection of the artist’s personal experience during a challenging period between late 2017 to 2021. The monochromatic paintings capture the essence of different seasons\, reflecting on the changing cycles of nature in relation to the fragility of human emotions. Some of the works are imbued with rainwater\, plants used in snuff\, and air through breathwork that created unique patterns on the delicate\, porous canvas. “Ultimately\, in fusing the healing that I found in landscapes as well as waterscapes was the message of surrender. Sometimes\, I reflect\, this is what I could have done when it started raining.” Through accepting loss\, acknowledging anger\, and meditating through fragility\, Msezane discovered a deeper understanding of these climates that echoed the seasons of her own experience. The exhibition is a grappling of the artist’s emotional\, mental\, and spiritual state during this period\, inviting viewers to contemplate their own journey of seasons and emotions. Join us for an immersive experience of reflection and contemplation as we explore an overcast sky through the eyes of Sethembile Msezane. \nThe exhibition promises to be a deeply moving and thought-provoking journey that will leave you inspired and enriched. \n  \nOkapi  \nOpen for Luxurious\, artisanal leather goods entirely handmade in Africa from sustainably sourced local material. \nTrue Design  \nLocal Grown \nExhibition in collaboration with Art Room \nParking Lot  \nAmex Mural painting

Many of the artists we are researching are formally trained\, some are recent graduates and all of them speak to the sometimes necessary phase of unlearning institutional pedagogy. They embody the idea of learning the rules in order to break them\, pointing to the way in which many artists based on the tip of Africa are establishing a singular voice that taps into internal knowledge. The participating artists follow various personal steps to create their work: an assembly of fragments that punctuate self-reflection. The project is also a continuous contemplation of our research and appreciation of reflections of artistic expressions and shared knowledge inherited from people’s ancestors. The exhibition aims to showcase different forms of knowledge and practices concerning personal narratives\, nature and the universe. INCCA has produced this exhibition as a starting point\, we hope it announces new research into the subject of the conservation of knowledge. It is the first of a number of iterations which will hopefully address the visibility of unconventional art making processes. \n  \n \n  \nStudio Nxumalo\nWE ARE WATER – Artists: Heather Gourlay-Conyngham and Jared Kruger. \nWater is looking at your attitude towards it. Something happens in water that is very similar to what happens in a human brain when something is put into it\, not just physical input\, but inputs that either come in a form of touch\, emotion and or an utterance of a sound or a mantra\, this can change and impact the neuronal structure of water. Therefore if we keep a good relationship with the water that surrounds us\, water that is within us and water that still has to come to us today\, even if its dirty water\, once it enters us\, we will dance and enjoy\, if we maintain a relationship like that with water\, our physical health and physical life will always be taken care of. \n– Sahdguru (The Mystical Secrets Of Water\, Isha Foundation\, Youtube) \nHeather Conyngham is based in the Midlands\, KwaZulu-Natal\, whilst Jared Kruger is based in thedeep south of Cape Town\, Western Cape. Both artists have a connection to the sea\, due to their coastal proximity or in this instance as an ideology that is explored and expressed through their individual bodies of work that foregrounds the ocean. Studio Nxumalo has invited the artists to a joint exhibition\, that intends to visually explore ideas around water and or the ocean\, as explored and inspired by both Conyngham and Kruger’s body of works. \nAligning with the studio’s intention to explore exhibitions and projects that contribute to conversations that are concerned with our physical\, spiritual\, psychological as well as environmental well-being\, Studio Nxumalo intends to work with this exhibition to remind our audience about our life’s proximity and similarity to water. That despite our flaws as humans\, and various inputs and impacts that our lives encounter on our day-to-day living experiences\, we remain an ocean that keeps bringing life\, light and beauty to planet earth and we should never stop exploring our potential. \n  \n \n  \nEverard Read\nExhibition Openings – 2 February at 6pm \n‘Desi Casual Glamour‘ – Artist: Githan Coopoo \n  \n \n  \nDesi Casual Glamour – A solo exhibition by Githan Coopoo A loud and deliberate gesture. A conversation between India the prophecy and a younger version of myself – a double diaspora desi\, in the throes of belonging and not\, all at once. An anthem to flamboyance\, camp\, boyish effeminacy and spectacle. Spanning a series of bright and chalky sculpted \naccessories\, Desi Casual Glamour is a mosaic of Indian cultural references\, songs and affections. More than anything\, it draws on overt stereotypes\, specifically of the Hindu faith. exhibition opening 02 February 18:00. This role-play Yoga practice serves to encourage emotional healing and rejuvenation by encouraging you to shirk off inhibitions and surrender to your inner child. Ferdi B Dick’s \nwhimsical and brightly coloured artworks strive to foster feelings of excitement and invite audiences to step into his exhilarating imaginative world. \nAddress: 6 Jellicoe Avenue\, Rosebank. \n  \nGallery 3\nClosed for renovations

SUMMARY:DESI CASUAL GLAMOUR
DESCRIPTION:2 February 2023 – 11 March 2023 \nDesi Casual Glamour is an ode to South African Indian culture\, songs\, and affection through an anthem of flamboyance\, camp\, and boyish effeminacy. Githan Coopoo intends to hold a conversation between South African Indian prophecy and grappling with his identity as a “double diaspora desi”\, belonging and not belonging all at once”. Coopoo references overt stereotypes in the South Asian Faith to comment on specific societal discourses withheld and enforced on him growing up as a South Asian in a South African context. \nEach of the clay handbags boasts a brightly painted phrase that evokes a range of emotions in relation to Coopoo’s self-identity. Coopoo’s use of exuberant colours acts as a protective blanket between light-hearted commentary and a deeper identity and ethnicity conflict. At face value the phrases appear to be light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek\, however\, Coopoo urges his audience to ruminate on whether these phrases are celebratory or cultural insults rooted in ignorance. The ceramics are totems of the queer South Asian diaspora and its experience. \nCoopoo’s use of ceramics as a medium is driven by his love for mythology ancient craftsmanship and the relics of yesteryear handed down from one civilization to the next. The romance of objects lost and then found again lies in the transformation of it’s meaning over time. In this light\, Coopoo wants to express a transmission of queer ideas through a medium that will stand the test of time. Coopoo adopts the challenging method of using air-drying clay\, deliberately departing from the traditional use of a kiln in ceramic production. \nGithan Coopoo is a self-taught sculptor and jewellery designer from Cape Town who works exclusively with clay as a base medium. Originaly focused on volume\, opulence and fragility\, Coopoo’s clay jewellery has been shown at Fashion Weeks internationally\, including New York\, Paris\, Nigeria and Russia. Expanding upon his practice\, the recent years have seen the production of large-scale works\, best described as false ceramics. These works have predominantly taken the form of tiles\, vases and handbags which use text to communicate simple but pointed messages of a queer tonality that span from sarcastic to intimate in timbre. \nAs part of the inaugural exhibition for the Norval Foundation x Boschendal Manor House in Franschhoek\, Coopoo presented his first solo presentation\, Structural Integrity\, in 2021. Coopoo’s presentation The Luxury of Wearing Fakes\, with Everard Read Cape Town\, explored luxury consumption in both art and fashion\, while again being bolstered by the base and colourful remarks teetering between the existential and tongue-in-cheek. Coopoo also presented work with the gallery at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair in 2022.

SUMMARY:Keyes Art Mile & TMRW A Super Modern Project (Death is more)
DESCRIPTION:Nayoungim co-founder of experimental KimKim Gallery Seoul will introduce the Super Modern Project. “A Super Modern Project”\, raises paradoxical questions about the perception of “modernity” that has become common opinion. Through works that critically dismantle the abstractions of generalised perceptions and concepts\, a reality of the specificity and individuality of this phenomena concealed in universality is revealed. It focuses on the creativity the artist’s “sub”- culture catalyses and creates through the works presented in a “super modern” attitude. \nThe project seeks to produce diversity and openness in an individual atmosphere. Keyes Art Mile and TMRW Gallery are delighted to host the Super Modern Project with presentations by The Rice Brewing Sisters Club and Geologic Bakery. \nFollow this extraordinary concept on social media here: @geologic_bakery @ricebrewingsistersclub @kim_kim_gallery

SUMMARY:A Super Modern Project (Death is more)
DESCRIPTION:Keyes Art Mile and TMRW will be hosting A Super Modern Project (Death is more) in collaboration with the Korean Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism\, the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE)\, Korean Travelling Arts and KIM KIM Gallery. \nThe title of the interactive exhibition – A Super Modern Project (Death is more) – raises paradoxical questions about the perception of modernity\, which has become a common opinion. Through works that critically dismantle the abstractions of generalised perceptions and concepts\, a reality of the specificity and individuality of the phenomena concealed in universality is revealed. Ultimately\, A Super Modern Project (Death is more) hopes to produce diversity and openness in an individual atmosphere\, while focusing on the creativity the artists’ sub-culture catalyses and creates through the works presented in a ‘super modern’ attitude. \nThe first project in the exhibition is a 10-day project by The Rice Brewing Sisters Club called CHEW CHEW SPIT SPIT. It explores how we might shift the paradigm of development. RBSC (The Rice Brewing Sisters Club) creates an “empty plot of land” in the Keyes Art Mile Atrium and fills it with materials foraged from Joburg. Above this plot\, layers of materials local to South Africa and Joburg – will be added to form a mixed landscape incorporating traditional\, local knowledge and site-based skills\, technology and methodologies. This ephemeral land will develop into a mixture\, interacting with the environment\, atmosphere\, bodies and everything that naturally and artificially exists in its local climate. Participants from the workshop and knowledge holders will be invited to produce a mixture of CHEW CHEW SPIT SPIT that includes the process of drying\, mixing\, chewing and spitting. \nAndeath’s Geologic Bakery – the collaboration’s second project – endeavours to trace the origins of the universe through ‘cosmic’ baking. Having thought of a tilted cake while travelling along the Andes Mountains\, the artist attempts baking in order to understand the birth of the mountain. Andeath’s baking alternates between failed shapes and succeeded flavours\, and she autonomously studies geology\, physics\, math and astronomy to understand the phenomena inside the oven. Take part in Andeath’s learning process that connects nebula and THE Grand Canyon by eating crunchy balloon bread and sausage bread – an interesting and unusual endeavour of tracing the origin of the universe.

SUMMARY:Diaries of Injustice
DESCRIPTION:Layziehound and Siphamandla Ex \n\nThe collaborative exhibition by artists Layziehound and Siphamandla Ex is comprised of ten paintings\, one of which is a collaborative piece. Layziehound’s abstract works address the reality that in South Africa – justice is not for all\, but rather for those who can afford it\, highlighting the manner in which truth becomes obscured by those who claim to be ignorant – including the citizens who continue to support an unjust regime. Siphamandla Ex’s portraits depict the faces who have access to the truth\, and those independent law firms and state representatives who act against state interests.

SUMMARY:The Body in the World
DESCRIPTION:Fathema Bemath and Frans Thoka\nAn exhibition of work by two exciting emerging talents both addressing the constraints placed on the black and female body in ways both political and representational. Both artists take an innovative approach to unusual material in their work to speak to the pressure which the body is put under through misogyny\, oppressive ideologies and covert racism. And yet both find a way to respond through the meaning in their work and mediums – Fathema through portraying the body under erasure and in emergence in her sculpture\, and Frans through the symbolism of the traditional Basotho and prison blankets through these he re-evaluates the continuing trauma of the black body in the post-Apartheid landscape.
