SUMMARY:Writer's Block Season 2: Public Talk 2
DESCRIPTION:How does a feeling translate into movement? How can bodies share a story? How are contemporary artists today creating their own stages and worlds? How has the tradition of struggle theatre configured the type of performances we see in South African stages today? We will also think about theatre criticism\, and how we can work towards writing about theatre from a place of empathy\, engagement\, and care.

SUMMARY:A New Art Writing: Contemporary criticism and alternative forms of art criticism
DESCRIPTION:Why do we write about art? What does it do—for us\, for artists\, the industry\, the world? What is the state of arts media in South Africa\, today? Where can writers publish? Moderated by David Mann\, this discussion between art writers Christa Dee\, Barbara Rousseaux\, and Rob Scher\, will move between the contextual and the personal\, touching on the state of contemporary arts criticism while identifying some of the emergent\, alternative forms of writing about art\, today. \nVenue | Gallery 1/Atrium\, Keyes Art Mile\, Rosebank \nDate | Thursday 31 July \nTime | 18h00 \nRSVP | https://forms.gle/mFGBTmXti5vvtt8SA \n  \n\n  \nBárbara Rousseaux is an Argentine economist\, researcher and writer based in Johannesburg.  Throughout her career\, Bárbara has worked across disciplines and coordinated cultural projects\, human rights initiatives\, and worked as an arts journalist. She currently works at the Joburg Contemporary Art Foundation (JCAF) as Project Manager for Latin America and Managing Editor for the JCAF Journal. SUMMARY:Exquisite Corpse Workshop with House of Special Things (HOST)
DESCRIPTION:“Le cadavre exquis boira le vin nouvea” – the exquisite corpse will drink the new wine…\n\nThis Thursday we invite you to think and draw like a surrealist by jumping into the game of Exquisite Corpse! The game was invented in 1925 by an iconic group of surrealists and has since remained a well loved\, generative creative act.\n\nDuring the workshop you will collaborate with friends and make some new ones in creating fantastically absurd images. Each group will receive one sheet of paper folded into sections\, each participant will be in control of a section\, having only vague linework of what the previous person has drawn to guide them. This results in a figurative image that includes the imagination of all participants.\n\nJoin us at the final installment of Keyes Art Night for the year to participate in the workshop and enjoy the various shows that will be up in the atrium and surrounding galleries.\n

SUMMARY:Architectural Narratives: An exhibition and panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday 24 August 2024 at 10am at Keyes Art Mile for a panel discussion focused on the architecture exhibition “Narratives of Migration and Reclamation”\, currently on display at Keyes Art Mile.  \nOur panellists include Kgaugelo Lekalakala\, a young architect and artist; Gugulethu Mthembu\, a practising architect and gender activist; Kate Otten\, an architect known for creating nurturing spaces; and Gloria Pavita\, a storyteller and spatial practitioner. It showcases the inspiring and transformative potential of architecture through the perspective of female African architects. The works employ a variety of mediums to explore migration\, displacement\, and socio-cultural impacts on women. \nThe exhibition includes Kate Otten’s exploration of mining’s impact on migration\, Kgaugelo Lekalakala’s critique of the female body’s navigation through fragmented landscapes\, Gugulethu Mthembu’s reimagining of the folklore of Aicha Qandisha\, and Gloria Pavita’s intimate narrative on soil as a medium of care and reclamation. Each piece offers a unique and captivating perspective on the intersection of architecture and women’s experiences. \nThe exhibition closes on 24 August 2024. \nEvent details: \nDate: 24 August 2024 \nTime: 10am \nVenue: Keyes Art Mile\, 21 Keyes Avenue\, Rosebank\, Johannesburg \nThis panel discussion is hosted by Keyes Art Mile\, IQOQO\, GIFA and SAIA. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage in thought-provoking discussions on migration\, displacement\, and the socio-cultural impacts on women in architecture. SUMMARY:Interwoven Identities: Lace\, Legacy and Liberation - Opening
DESCRIPTION:Please join Origin Art for the opening of this exceptional exhibition \nWe’re excited to present the works of Fathema Bemath and Buqaqawuli Nobakada\, two artists who explore the rich symbolism of lace as a medium for challenging traditional gender norms and celebrating feminine resilience. Bemath’s sculptures juxtapose the strength of workman’s tools with the delicate intricacy of lace and porcelain\, questioning the association of fragility with femininity. Nobakada’s mixed media works reclaim lace from its sexualized narrative\, presenting it as a symbol of power and self-determination in Black womanhood. Together\, their works invite a reexamination of femininity\, identity\, and the strength woven into the very fabric of women’s lives. \n???? Saturday 25 November 2023\n????️ 12pm\n???? 19 Keyes Ave\, Rosebank \nBemath and Nobakada are paragons of resilience and rebellion in this incredible dialogue on feminism in our perpetually patriarchal societies.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION OPENING - BLOOMING AMAZING: NIC BLADEN
DESCRIPTION:Blooming Amazing runs from 02 August – 16 September 2023. \nThey are plants you will instantly recognize. “Oh”\, you might exclaim\, “we’ve got Agapanthus in their droves outside the lounge”\, or “isn’t that plant with the orange petals we’ve got growing at the back of that flower bed?” \nAs the last gusts of winter blow through Johannesburg\, Nic Bladen – the global rock star of botanical art – has turned his hand to sculpt endemic flowering plants many South Africans will know\, or even have in their own gardens. The brilliant bronzes in this new collection are a sign that spring is just around the corner in the City of Gold. \n“This much anticipated assemblage is very much a celebration of flowering plants that you may come across along the way on a walk”\, says Everard Read Chairman\, Mark Read. That walk might be into the hills around Kommetjie\, outside Cape Town\, where Bladen is based\, but you are just as likely to spot the budding Crassulas\, Clivias and Ericas that this master caster has conjured in a meander around your own suburb. Floral fundis and those simply appreciative of beautiful blooms will find equal enjoyment in this bronze bounty. \nBladen’s spectacularly crafted sculptures are part alchemy\, part fanatical technical brilliance. It is a devotion to the natural world as well as his artistic wizardry that have put these metal manifestations of plant matter into a class of their own when it comes to botanical art. This new collection is no different. Were it not for the powdery\, metallic sheen of the pieces\, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were looking at a complete\, real-life plant\, suspended from root to tip. \nOver decades\, Bladen has produced botanical sculptures based on biomes\, reserves\, regions\, plant families and the likes. Here he has changed tack\, concentrating on ‘garden’ plants – the samples he cast coming from nurseries. \nTypically\, the Cape Town artist sources the samples to work from by harvesting complete plants or cuttings from the wild or collecting nursery plants. As he puts it\, “I have different relationships with these three methods of obtaining the precious plant-matter”. \nCollecting from nurseries seems an easy fix\, but it comes with a particular complexity for Bladen. “It has a transactional element in it for me”\, he says. “The plant has not yet made contact with the earth in which it will flourish. It is in a holding space and is only slightly easier for me to apply the bronzing process to. Here\, they are usually relatively unblemished in their prime\, and put onto the nursery floor just as that species starts flowering”. The creative process might have its tensions\, but the result is artwork set to delight Joburgers. \nBlooming Amazing runs from 02 August – 16 September 2023. \nFor more information on the exhibition\, contact Gina Mollé at gina@everard.co.za or Mark Read at mark@everard.co.za

SUMMARY:IQOQO Sessions: Visual Art
DESCRIPTION:IQOQO Sessions is a series of nine inspiring talks hosted by IQOQO and taking place on 1\, 2\, 3 August 2023 at True Design in the Keyes Art Mile\, Rosebank. IQOQO Sessions is a satellite event of Joburg Decor & Design Week\, which is a new amalgamation of three very successful events: Decorex\, Design Joburg\, and 100% Design. \nEach Session tells a gripping story full of big ideas about how a leading young creative in South Africa arrived at their groundbreaking early-career moment. In the process\, these aspirational and educational tales reveal the networks and opportunities that exist in South Africa and the world that they were able to access in order to reach their dreams. \nWhat journey did a filmmaker go on to develop their first feature? How did a fashion designer come to stage their first debut international fashion show? What led to that artist’s first major exhibition? How did a game developer create their game or that architect their first award-winning building? What is the story behind their passion for Virtual Reality? Or how did they end up working in animation?

SUMMARY:Walkabout: Realities and Representations Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Origin Art presents: Realities and Representations curated by Masechaba Moloi & Oliver Antonie \nForms of Abstraction\nAlex Coetzee & Olaf Bisschoff \nThis is a new exhibition by two innovative mid-career artists working in different mediums\, with ideas about abstraction. The exhibition presents an interplay between form\, composition\, colour and material within each artist’s body of work. But more than this\, it offers a view between each body of work in the gallery as two- and three-dimensional reflections on abstraction and its propensity to foreground and recontextualise materiality\, object choices\, colour and the relationship to representation itself.
