A Multitude of immersive and sensory experiences at this April’s Art & Design Saturday
21 April 2018
10:00 – 17:00

The 2018 season of Art & Design Saturday at Keyes Art Mile brings together new and established creative voices, providing a space for both critical engagement and laid-back entertainment. Each month a newly curated focus is presented to audiences with interests in contemporary visual arts and cutting-edge design.

April’s event explores the various ways in which technology is redefining the visual arts. A multitude of not-to-be-missed immersive and sensory experiences are presented in collaboration with the newly opened TMRW digital gallery. Fast establishing itself as an important space for artistic exploration and hi-tech play from its base at Keyes, TMRW (The Mixed Reality Workshop) is at the intersection of art and technology, blending augmented, virtual and mixed reality as tools for artistic real-world experiences.

Among the highlights of Art & Design Saturday, taking place on April 21st, is a solo exhibition by Mongezi Ncaphayi, presented in collaboration with SMAC Gallery. The recipient of the 2013 Absa L’atelier Gerard Sekoto Award, Ncaphayi’s practice has earned him significant acclaim since the start of his career in 2006 – his large-scale paintings will be brought to life using augmented reality during this month’s Art & Design Saturday on 21 April 2018. Visitors to the exhibition in the Keyes Art Mile Atrium will be able to experience how camera technology recognises and tracks a painting, and then superimposes digital content onto reality, in real time.

Augmented reality will also be used within the TMRW Digital Gallery space to give viewers an immersive experience of the sculptural work of Sophia van Wyk, presented in association with Hazard Gallery. Van Wyk combines second-hand furniture with biomorphic forms to convey a sense of tension and disruption in exploring the gendered aspects of her cultural identity as an Afrikaner woman– and the use of augmented reality adds a compelling layer to Van Wyk’s artistic practice.

Visitors to April’s Art & Design Saturday will be able to discover the sensory experience of virtual reality with New Dimensions – a series of virtual reality (VR) film productions from Kenya, Senegal and Ghana co-produced by Electric South and the Goethe-Institut South Africa and supported by Big World Cinema, Blue Ice Docs and the Bertha Foundation.

Each of these works offers a view of the vibrant, diverse and ever-changing cultural landscape of contemporary Africa, and will be available to view in the TMRW gallery during the day.

The focus on digital and video art continues at the MESH Club cinema, which will be screening a looped video by artist collaborative, CUSS Group. Formed in 2011, the collective is multi-disciplinary, responding to commercial, cultural, and technological super-hybridity in contemporary South Africa and beyond using a variety of mediums.

Food, drink and music are an integral part of the mix at April’s Art & Design Saturday with MESH Club offering great coffee, breakfast, lunch and tapas for sundowners with a selection of bespoke cocktails from their new bar MIX. Visitors can also grab a coffee at Yield, lunch at Marble, taking in the breathtaking panorama over Joburg, or head to BGR and Milk Bar for their usual delicious fare.

Motel Mari will provide the soundtrack for an afternoon of relaxation in the Bombay Sapphire and Prosecco lounge in the outdoor Atrium, which is being styled by True Design and will showcase a new range of Moroso furniture. A long time favourite of Joburg’s music aficionados, Motel Mari comprises Mpumelelo Mcata, Tshepang Ramoba (BLK JKS) and João Orecchia. The trio will play live at 2pm.

Other highlights of Art & Design Saturday are:

  • Asha Zero’s solo exhibition “set user” at SMAC. A term associated with gaming avatars, “set user” implies a concern with reality and appearance in terms of a personal identity in an online world. At the heart of Zero’s inquiry in paint is a concern with the multiplicity of reality and appearance in contemporary society.
  • Expert collector and curator, Warren Siebrits will be giving a talk on a selection of Edoardo Villa sculptures on display at Everard Read and CIRCA at 10:00am.
  • Mesh Photography Series, presented by The Everard Read Gallery. This annual photography programme is aimed at acquainting critical photography practice with new audiences. This iteration showcases two independent bodies of work by Ilan Godfrey and Michelle Loukidis, both curated by Musa N. Nxumalo and will include a walkabout on Saturday with Loukidis at 11:30am.
  • Richard Penn’s solo exhibition “1s & 0s”, presented by The Everard Read Gallery. In this exhibition Penn continues his exploration of ‘origins’. Following closely on the heels of his major solo exhibition at CIRCA Cape Town in November 2017, his new work delves into the quantum foundations of our reality and depicts a strange, abstract world of geometric shapes seemingly governed by their own gravitational force. Penn will be giving a walkabout at 10:30am on Saturday.
  • “We are now, what you once were” – a solo exhibition at CIRCA by Michael MacGarry, comprising sculpture, video and installation.
  • A pop-up by gallery and online platform, ArtVault – showcasing works by both emerging artists as well as established South African masters.
  • Anatomy, True Design, Okapi and Shelflife will all be open for browsing.

SMAC Gallery is proud to present 'set user', a solo exhibition of new paintings by Asha Zero. Please join us for the opening at SMAC Gallery Johannesburg on Thursday, 01 March 2018, at 18h00. This exhibition opening will coincide with First Thursdays Johannesburg on the KEYES ART MILE in Rosebank, Johannesburg. Known for deconstructing traditional notions of identity and representation, dominated today by contemporary media, branding, marketing, and advertising, Asha Zero’s hyper-realistic paintings speak into the various traditions and languages within the history of Modernism and Postmodernism alike.

Keyes Art Mile is launching a series of art talks that will take place on a quarterly basis in The Atrium of The Trumpet building. Talking Art at Keyes will provide people with an opportunity to engage in robust discussions about how art informs, challenges and moves us. The series will explore ways in which art gives the artistic community a voice – a platform to comment, express, interpret and interrogate with a freedom that is so often inhibited or censored

Keyes Art Mile has packaged a parcel of inspiration for you in the form of Art & Design Saturday. And it’s taking place this Saturday, 25 November 2017.
