Keyes Art Mile has packaged a parcel of inspiration for you in the form of Art & Design Saturday. And it’s taking place this Saturday, 25 November 2017.
The good news is that it starts at 10h00, so it won’t affect your sleep in or last minute gym session to get your body beach ready.
However – if you are a complete sneaker-fundi addicted to the cream of the sneaker-crop, Shelflife store and Shelflife online will be dropping the brand new adidas Yeezy Boost 350 v2 Beluga 2.0. There will be an online raffle and live in store raffle release. Go to shelflife.co.za for details.
Art Saturday officially kicks off at street level with a three piece jazz band playing three sets over the course of the morning – with extra pavement seating for those weary year-end bones to settle in to.
The Butchery will be open and ready to serve as the saxophonist strikes the first note, and they’ve added a cachet of Christmas purchases and packaging to their already tempting array of culinary-related gift items. You can also pop in to Anatomy Design for Botanicus fresh and dried Christmas wreaths and Kartell, who has gathered some designer patioware and smalls to wrap up and pop under the Christmas tree.
And while you are inside wandering into Cassina Design Showroom, visit SMAC Art Gallery – which is holding a Limited Edition Book Sale, with a selection of books signed by SMAC artists. Please also visit Southern Guild at 10h30. They are inviting guests to meet a selection of artists & designers – Guy du Toit, Heino Schmitt and Phillippe Bousquet – included in their current group show, Industry.
The Milk Bar is launching a new menu – so there will be a plentiful choice of nibbles and pastries to snack on while enjoying that morning cappuccino – and back by popular demand is a Pop In Pop Up by Jana+Koos. It will feature a limited run of #JHBHATESYOU T-shirts and a selection of J+K artworks and prints. For the early birds, this pop up opens on Friday 24 November and closes on Sunday 26 November.
For visitors with something cerebral in mind, walk across to the Everard Read Gallery. Bad Paper publishers will be launching Rodan Kane Hart’s At Work – a new 280-page artist monograph presenting the past six years of Hart’s work, featuring insightful texts by art writer Sean O’Toole, artist Michael MacGarry, and Hart himself. At 11h00, Rodan will discuss aspects of the book and a signing will take place afterwards.
Back across the cobbled road, the best burgers and milkshakes in town will be ready to satiate your hunger pangs at BGR. In The Atrium, a 15-minute performance art piece by Kieron Jina presented by MOMO The Magazine, will be held at 11:30 and 12:30, while Bloedlemoen – the perfect performance partner – will provide that absolutely obligatory G&T for anyone hoping to remain intact for the last few weeks of 2017.
But before you get stuck into too many G&Ts, keep your wits about you and join the Backgammon Tournament at Okapi from 10h00 until 14h00. Click onto the okapi.com website to find out how to register and you’ll find all the details there.
If you haven’t seen Nigel Mullins at Circa as yet – please wind your way up that beautiful oval staircase, and then pop across to MESH Club for a delicious brunch option and an art screening of Falling (2017) by Sethembile Nsezane (http://
Once you’ve feasted on food and design, make your way to Upstairs at Mesh – a four-month pop up champagne bar, with delicious gourmet street food and beautiful views over Joburg. Talks, screenings, art and music sessions are all on the programme – so watch your social media for Saturday’s details.
The piece de resistance, of course, would be a flame-roasted lunch at Marble at the end of a morning packed with arts and culture, design and music. So if you’ve managed to circumvent the best brunches, burgers and breakfasts on hand, you’ll be more than ready to indulge in something sublime from David Higg’s kitchen. You can spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the view and dreaming of a much needed holiday.
