Connect, relax and be inspired at the Strauss & Co Art Hub at Keyes Art Mile
As Johannesburg prepares for its most high-profile art week of the year, Keyes Art Mile has announced the launch of the Strauss & Co Art Hub, offering art aficionados and enthusiasts a place to pause for a glass of wine or coffee with friends, and engage with Strauss & Co’s team of specialists.
Hosted in The Atrium on Keyes Art Mile, the hub will be a place for connection, relaxation and inspiration during the upcoming Art Week Joburg 2018. The hub will be open from Wednesday 5 September until Sunday 9 September.
A drawcard of the curated lounge space will be an exhibition of selected artworks from both Strauss & Co’s October 15th contemporary art sale in Cape Town and the final Johannesburg sale of the year, which takes place on November 12th.
“We are really looking forward to meeting art lovers during Art Week Joburg,” says Susie Goodman, Strauss & Co’s Executive Director. “We have partnered with Keyes Art Mile to present several really interesting lectures and talks. Members of our team will also be at the hub to talk to art buyers and sellers as well as those who are simply interested in learning more about the fine art market.”
First up on the Strauss Art Hub’s dynamic programme of events is A Conversation with Zeitz MOCAA: The Next Chapter which forms part of the ongoing Talking Art at Keyes series. Moderated by Goodman, the Wednesday September 5th gathering features a conversation with Zeitz MOCAA Co-Directors, Azu Nwagbogu (Acting Chief Curator), Brooke Minto (Director of Institutional Advancement) and Michael Farquhar (Acting Director of Operations). Together they will explore the next part of the journey for the world’s largest contemporary African art institution, followed by a question and answer session.
Other highlights of the Strauss Art Hub programme are two lectures on Friday September 7th. At 10h00, Strauss & Co presents How an Auction Works by Senior Art Specialist, Dr Alastair Meredith, and Executive Director, Susie Goodman. This is followed by a lecture on The Life & Times of Christo Coetzee by Senior Art Specialist, Wilhelm van Rensburg at 11h30. Van Rensburg will also give a talk on Women In Art at START, a new art platform created by St Theresa’s High School in partnership with Keyes Art Mile. START runs from 09h00 to 16h00 on Saturday September 8th at St Teresa’s High School in Keyes Avenue and Van Rensburg’s talk takes place at 12h00.
Keyes Art Mile’s Art & Design Saturday series continues with several art-themed events on Saturday September 8th. Among these is the opening of SMAC Gallery in its new location in the Trumpet on Keyes building. This will be marked by ‘offstage’, a solo exhibition of new works by Frances Goodman that opens at 11h00. Also in a new location, TMRW Gallery’s new exhibition Old Masters I New Realities, featuring the work of Lady Skollie and Wayne Barker responding to Gerard Sekoto and J.H. Pierneef, will be open to the public on September 8th.
Adding to the art week activities at Keyes Art Mile is First Thursdays at Keyes Art Mile which takes place on Thursday September 6th. Open from 18h00 – 21h00, this street party features jazz, vinyl DJs, live performances and a curated selection of food trucks.
To round off what’s certain to be an inspirational five-day art-experience, Mr Vinyl will be providing the soundtrack to the Strauss & Co Art Hub at Keyes Art Mile with a curated selection of great tunes.
