THE PANTRY MARKET AT KEYES
Visit the Pantry Market this month and walk away with everything you need to start your own vegetable garden
Keyes Art Mile’s popular Pantry Market is back on Saturday 25 August. To celebrate the end of a long and chilly winter, and to get everyone spring ready, the market will turn its focus to organic vegetable gardening for the month.
Visitors will, as usual, be able to shop an array of goods with which to stock their pantry – think fresh vegetables, butter, cheese, breads, pastries, grains, chocolate, macaroons, granola, honey, charcuterie, meat, spices and more, all responsibly produced by local, artisanal producers. In addition, as part of the Spring gardening focus, the market will provide everything needed to start thinking about growing your own food.
To start the conversation, the free monthly Pantry Market Talk will be hosted by South African gardening guru, Jane Griffiths of Jane’s Delicious Garden, who will share valuable advice for anyone wanting to grow organic vegetables and herbs. “Organically grown produce is far healthier for you and your family, plus growing your own food is a big step towards reducing your impact on the planet,” says Griffiths. “And it is much easier than you think,” she assures.
On Saturday 25 August at 10.30am Jane will be chatting about the basics of organic gardening, from the importance of healthy soil to finding out how to confuse the bugs. She will also share time-saving techniques and space-saving tips, answer any questions on organic vegetable gardening and sign and sell her popular gardening books.
After the talk, visitors keen to start gardening will be able to buy a tray of mixed seedlings from Seedling Stokvel, a local company that encourages edible gardening by providing a unique tray of mixed seedlings every season. From tomatoes to peppers, fennel, aubergine, herbs, lettuce and more, the Spring tray has all you need to instantly plant an abundant and beautiful veggie patch.
If you want to get growing, The Pantry Market August is the perfect place to start!
To complete the market experience, breakfast and lunch are available from the several Keyes Art Mile restaurants, including BGR, MESH Club / Mix Cocktail Bar, Milk Bar and Marble. In an exciting new initiative, Mix Cocktail Bar will be serving up a brunch menu created with products sourced from Pantry Market vendors. This will be complemented by their Bloody Mary Bar, where visitors will be able to build their own tomato cocktails.
True Design (Kartell, Moroso and Cassina), Okapi, Shelflife and Anatomy will be open for browsing and shopping.
